At Glyphics Design we like to get off the computer as much as possible, whether it’s taking photographs, acquiring textures, sketching or painting. Whatever it takes to get the creative juices flowing. We recently did a job for Best Western. The packaging job was to promote their new green towels that dry more quickly and are on the forefront of green thinking. To get all their hotels around the world to change over is a great step for the environment. Nice going BW!

I wanted a natural, almost primitive, child-like innocence to emit from this design so started by sketching and then moving to water color paper to get a nice texture. We worked with an existing die-cut line but then ended up changing it to have a more organic look, while encompassing the copy and the towel samples in the best way.

It’s great when you really like your client, you’re allowed to be creative and you get paid for it. Not only did we get off the computer to paint and sketch but then I ended up taking the loose sketches on the road with me and did a painting over the sketches just for fun.

I love the smell of ink. Play-Doh not so much. Doing a press check and smelling ink and watching it absorb into paper makes me happy, especially when the job looks the way I want it to. Here’s the Best Western job on pallets at Ironwood, who did a great job.

We are in the heat of designing the Bravo Vail Valley Music Festival.

This design has been used for a few years and we have just changed the color and a few design elements to freshen it up. I had no idea that this small daisy, that I photographed when I was in Vail, would be such a strong element that was used not only for one season but several. This year we wanted the look to be rich like chocolate and raspberries. Something that would draw you in and hold you in it’s ruby power. It’s fantastic to see how Bravo! has grown into a world renowned music festival.

First-of-its-kind museum in the U.S. aims to get Arizona kids and families healthy for life

PHOENIX, November 5, 2010 — The Halle Heart Children’s Museum, set to be unveiled in November, is the first and only interactive health and wellness museum in the United States. Located in Tempe, the museum offers highly engaging, interactive and imaginative learning experiences related to the heart, brain and cardiovascular system. The museum, named after prestigious philanthropists Bruce and Diane Halle, is considered one of Arizona’s crown jewels.

“The American Heart Association recognizes that in order to build healthier generations, education has to start early in life. Because of the Halle Heart Children’s Museum we are now able to influence positive lifestyle changes that will impact families for years to come,” said Nancy Brown, CEO of the American Heart Association.

“It’s an honor and privilege to have played a substantial role in the erection of the museum. Heart Ball is thrilled to know that the museum will improve the lives of Arizonans for generations to come,” said Sarah Suggs Cheek, 2010 Heart Ball chair.

At more than 16,000 square feet and featuring 14 permanent exhibits dedicated to cardiovascular health, the Halle Heart Children’s Museum is positioned to impact and transform young lives. The museum’s design reflects a raised ceiling-line, filled with exhibits that evoke a sense of awe. Life-size adult animals, including a giraffe and elephant, welcome children as they enter. These unprecedented exhibits were developed for the museum by renowned exhibit designer Andrew Gartner of Gartner Design in Scottsdale. The curation and graphic panels were directed and designed by Terry Duffy of Glyphics in Scottsdale.

“The Halle Heart Children’s Museum will educate children through the use of interactive and imaginative learning experiences that appeal to all ages,” said Pat Leach, Senior Vice President of the American Heart Association and Founder of the Halle Heart Children’s Museum. “Our commitment to extraordinary learning for both child and family drives everything we do, and the education offer at the Halle Heart Children’s Museum reflects who we are as an organization.”

“The museum epitomizes what we mean when we say, ‘Building healthier lives free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke’,” said Dr. John Schaller, president of the American Heart Association’s Board of Directors in Phoenix. “It’s yet another example of the American Heart Association’s goal to improve cardiovascular health by 20 percent by the year 2020. The museum is a year-round attraction that will draw children, educators, and families from across the state.”

The museum’s completion comes as the Heart Ball prepares to commemorate its 51st anniversary on Saturday, November 20th at the Phoenician. The prestigious gala and nationally-recognizes social event is an occasion to celebrate the organization’s many milestone achievements along with the positive attention the museum will bring to Arizona. It’s projected that the museum will welcome more than 35,000 visitors during its inaugural year when it officially opens to school children in January 2011.

The museum’s long-term impact is expected to help curb healthcare costs through the education of children and families when it comes to obesity and cardiovascular health. There is no charge for schools visiting the museum on educational fieldtrips.
